A piston gasholder essentially consists of the space enclosing shell (stanchions, shell plates, horizontal ribs and galleries), the roof structure with a ventilator upset, the vertically moving piston and an internal and external lift or staircase. The piston is guided by the stanchions of the shell. The internal pressure below the piston is given with the dead load of the piston and the ballast blocks distributed above the piston deck. Curved pipes below the bottom plates are used for the gasin-/-outlet. This type of gasholder ensures nearly constant internal pressure below the piston during operation and minimizes the dead storage volume for maintenance.
We design and calculate the whole gasholder including all stairs and lifts, the gasin-/-outlet and all details. The stanchions, the shell plates and the horizontal ribs are calculated and optimized using self-developed utilities, partially even considering the postbuckling behaviour. For some gasholders verifications for the loadcases earthquake, hurricane, soil settlement or disassembly were led. We also write expertises to evaluate the remaining load capacity and to verify the confirmity with the current standards.
