For the frames of traffic signs often cross sections of extruded aluminium are used. To minimize fatigue the stiffeners are integrated part of the extruded cross section and no external stiffeners are used. The wall thickness of the extruded cross section is not constant. Due to the complex geometry and the mutual influence of the parts of the cross section on the decisive local buckling load, it is recommended to use finite elements to calculate the limit load of the extruded cross section.
For different loads (axial force, bending and torsional moment) and several web-heights and web-thicknesses we calculated the buckling values. Based upon these buckling values the verification for combined loads now can be led by a simple hand calculation. To evaluate the conditions for the stability of the parts of the cross section, the shapes of the decisive eigenvalues are given.
