Positional stability of stack up tanks

arrangement of the tanks

Situation

We had to determine the limit situations with ensured positional stability for the stack up tanks (imperfections and filling situations). The saddles were resting between the tanks without fixation.

The critical situation for the tank 12 (see above) is given, if the tanks 13, 22 and 23 are filled and the tank 12 remains empty. Due to the ovalization of the tanks 1 and 2 there is an outward displacement of tank 12. This outward displacement is increased by the passing through and redirected reaction force for tank 22. The calculations for the positional stability and the limit imperfections are done by equilibrating the outward forces with the stabilizing dead load of tank 12.

In the case of changing filling situations some saddles may slip downwards. So the saddles necessary for the stability of the stack up tanks had to be fixed subsequently. The stiffness of the bearing conditions and the saddles significantly is influencing the positional stability of the stack. To evaluate the associated stiffnesses we performed a fe-calculation.
