For a great number of curved rooflights with differing radii and span widths (1,5m to 6,0m) and for differing coverings (glas, plastic) aluminium staves and steel frames with their connections had to be designed. Also the necessary ties between the frames to couple the horizonal straddle forces were to be arranged. The verification was done in the form of a type statics and implied the complete relevant parameter range for buildings.
The rooflights contained smoke and heat exhausting installations and therefor had to be openable. Thus additional local loads due to the machinery opening mechhanism were to be considered.
The calculation of the frames was done using the effective breadths of the sheet sections to consider local plate buckling. Thus also postbuckling reserves could be taken into account and the verification led to an increase of economy.
