The gas pipe for filling and emptying a gasholder must be able to seal the vessel reliably and quickly in the case of disaster. To do this, it will be flooded using an adjoining water tank.
The gas pipe was idealized with the FE program RFEM from Dlubal for the exceptional loadcase 'dead loads' and 'water filling'. The stresses resulting from the FE calculation were classified as primary and secondary stresses. The primary stresses are the shell stresses required for equilibrium. The secondary stresses are not required for equilibrium and may therefore exceed the yield stress within certain limits, as long as cyclic plasticizing can be excluded.
